The White Light Nobody Saw

A postcard waited at the next rest stop’s message desk.

It was addressed to THE FRIENDS WHO ANSWERED.

Pip turned it over. The front looked blank. The back looked blank too, apart from the address.

“Perhaps the picture fell off,” he said.

Ivo offered a recycling tray.

“I can help with the remaining paper.”

Zuri ran one finger gently along the edge.

“Wait.”

There were little ridges across the card. They rose and dipped like paths on a tiny map.

Noor asked the desk worker whether they could examine it at the reading table. The worker brought a lamp and a clean board.

Dandy reached into his pocket for his glasses. A small ribbon came out first.

Pip took the ribbon.

“A useful clue?”

“A useful ribbon,” Dandy said. “Let’s allow it to be itself.”

Noor placed the postcard beneath the lamp.

Still blank.

Pip held his sketch of the red lantern beside it. Then his blue bubble drawing.

“Every other clue had a bright color,” he said.

“This one might use something else,” Zuri replied.

Mira lowered the reading lamp a little. Light slipped across the card from the side.

A pale line appeared.

“There!” Pip cried.

Everyone leaned closer without touching the lamp.

The line curved around a tiny bench. Beside it stood a round shape with seven windows.

Zuri’s heart gave a happy bump.

“The station!”

Noor slid a dark board behind the card. Its white pattern became easier to see.

Ivo considered the board.

“I know another very dark thing.”

“What?” asked Pip.

“Toast that has received excessive enthusiasm.”

Dandy chuckled. “We’ll keep our experiment on the reading table.”

The image showed Sunflower Station with its door open. Tiny paper flags hung above the welcome bench.

Below the picture were rows of raised symbols.

Noor found an old station-symbol guide in the message desk’s reference folder. They checked each row carefully. Zuri copied the shapes rather than guessing at the words.

Some symbols pointed to places. Others represented simple messages.

An open arch meant door.

A little dot inside a circle meant here.

A map shape crossed by a line meant information missing.

As Noor compared the final row, Pip noticed a faint white arrow along the bottom edge.

It pointed toward the message.

Mira adjusted the lamp again, and small pale letters appeared beside the raised symbols.

Noor read them aloud.

“MY DOOR IS OPEN. MY MAP SAYS YOU ARE ALL GONE.”

The table became quiet.

“All gone?” said Zuri.

“But we are here,” Pip said.

Mira looked at their current route map. It had no Sunflower Station on it.

“Perhaps their map is as old as ours is incomplete.”

Dandy nodded slowly. “We have been following missing colors. Someone may be following missing people.”

Pip drew a large arrow pointing to his new picture of the group.

Under it he wrote WE ARE HERE.

Zuri added a little welcome bench with room beside them.

Noor helped address their reply through the working channel.

This time, they included both words and a picture.

Ivo kept the recycling tray tucked safely away.

“The remaining paper,” he announced, “was extremely important.”
