The Quietest Signal

The birthday reply stayed on the screen.

I REMEMBER BIRTHDAYS.

Pip had drawn three possible cakes for their next message. Zuri had added a little question beneath each one.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO TELL US?

Their pictures traveled through the reply route. Short written answers sometimes came back.

But whenever Noor tried the voice channel, it filled with music, greetings and pieces of old festival announcements.

“Welcome, welcome, wel - ”

Seven notes.

“Please bring your - ”

Seven more notes.

Ivo lifted his head.

“The signal needs greater confidence.”

“How do we give a signal confidence?” asked Pip.

“A megaphone.”

Mira shook her head with a smile. “Let’s understand what we’re hearing before we make it louder.”

Noor lowered the speaker to a comfortable level. Dandy closed the community room’s door, leaving the quiet corner beside the window available.

Zuri drew a row of little boxes. She marked where each bit of speech stopped.

Pip hummed the seven notes softly.

He had heard them so many times that they felt familiar now.

After the final note, there was always a pause.

A small pause.

Then another announcement began.

“Could we leave that space empty?” he asked.

Noor looked up. “Show me what you mean.”

Pip sang the tune again. He held up his hand after the seventh note.

Nobody spoke.

Ivo opened his mouth speaker, then closed it.

For a moment, the room held only the gentle sound of its air system.

“That space,” Pip said.

Noor checked the old channel settings. The festival program kept starting its invitation again before a reply could finish. The return voice channel also closed too quickly.

They asked Mira to review the connection with them. The adults made a simple test channel and kept it open manually.

“Pictures have helped us reach someone,” Noor said. “Now let’s give them room to answer.”

Dandy spoke into the microphone.

“Hello. We received your birthday message. We are listening.”

Noor played the seven-note tune once.

Then they waited.

Zuri counted quietly on her fingers. At ten, she began again.

Pip watched a small moving line on the screen.

Ivo held all six feet still.

A faint sound arrived.

Click.

A little rustle.

Then silence.

Pip almost asked whether it had worked. He remembered his raised hand and waited another moment.

The moving line rose again.

A small voice said, “Is this the right address?”

“Yes,” said Mira. “You reached the friends who answered.”

“Did the birthday picture get there?”

“We sent it,” said Zuri. “And we received your reply.”

There was a soft chime. On the screen, seven little circles appeared around a sunflower.

Pip smiled so widely that his cheeks felt stretched.

The voice returned, clearer this time.

The words appeared on the screen as they were spoken.

MY NAME IS LUMI. DID YOU GET MY INVITATIONS?

Zuri looked at the stack of purple envelopes on the table.

“We found them,” she said.

“Some were lost for a long time,” Noor added gently. “We’re helping them reach the right places.”

“Oh,” said Lumi.

A small pause followed.

This time, nobody rushed to fill it.
