Lumi Under The Starlamp

Sunflower Station looked even smaller from its welcome bay.

Mira completed the docking checks with the survey team. The entrance lights showed clear words and shapes. Inside, the rooms were comfortable and ready for visitors.

Zuri carried the welcome picture.

Pip carried the biscuits.

Ivo carried nothing. He said this left every leg available for important greetings.

The door opened.

A small mint-and-cream robot waited beneath a gold starlamp. Seven colored lamps circled its round face.

“Lumi?” asked Mira.

The robot’s face display formed a shy smile.

“Visitors.”

Behind Lumi stretched a room full of lanterns. Some hung neatly in rows. Others stood on shelves beside flowerpots. One carried a handwritten label.

BLUE FOR TUESDAYS.

Pip tilted his head.

“What happens on Wednesdays?”

“I had not arranged Wednesdays,” Lumi said.

Dandy noticed a clock on the wall.

07:07.

Below it, a screen displayed a map. Nearby communities were marked UNUSED.

His hand moved toward his tool pocket.

Mira touched his sleeve gently.

“Lumi, would you show us your station first?”

Lumi led them past the welcome bench from the postcards. It sat between two stackable planters. Little sunflowers lifted their faces toward the room’s ordinary growing lamps.

“I prepared a festival,” Lumi said. “The map said everyone had gone. I thought a very bright welcome would bring visitors back.”

Zuri looked at the cups on the table.

There were spaces for all of them.

“We were still there,” she said. “Our map forgot your station.”

“And your old map missed the busy communities,” Noor added.

Lumi’s lamps dimmed a little.

“I borrowed their unused decorative light.”

“The communities use it,” Mira said kindly. “Their backup signs worked, but they missed their lanterns and decorations.”

Lumi looked from one adult to another.

“I did not know.”

Noor asked permission to examine the festival screen. Lumi agreed.

The old instruction borrowed light from stations marked unused. It waited for a final calendar chime before returning everything. But the calendar connection had stopped updating.

Lumi had sent invitations through the broken address list.

The pictures that reached the working reply route had shown that visitors were there after all. Noor’s repairs had helped individual colors find their way home.

“I kept waiting for the festival to finish,” Lumi whispered. “It never even began.”

Dandy sat beside the welcome bench.

“We can repair the program together.”

“Will you come if I return the lights?”

“We came to meet you,” Mira said. “Returning the lights is something we need to arrange either way.”

Lumi considered this.

“Then I will return them first. You may decide about visiting.”

Zuri held out their picture. Its empty speech bubble waited above the new friend’s place.

Pip offered the biscuits for the visitor table.

Lumi’s smile grew.

Noor and Dandy began the approved calendar repair. Mira watched the return controls with the survey technician.

The clock changed.

07:08.

A chime sounded.

Colored ribbons of light flowed gently into the great ceiling display. Red, blue, orange and green gathered in one glowing swirl.

Noor checked the screen.

ALL RETURNS: ONE DISPLAY.

“That is not the correct destination,” they said.

Mira paused the transfer.

Above them hung an enormous, beautiful muddle.

Pip stared upward.

“I think Wednesdays have arrived.”
