The Road You Can Read

Dandy’s first idea was to make the highway lights brighter.

“A very bright violet star,” he said, “could be seen from the far end of the hall.”

Mira tilted her head. “Perhaps. But let’s ask the travelers before we decide.”

Kala invited a small group to try the new signs. They came to Sunflower Station’s practice corridor, where nobody needed to catch a ship in a hurry.

Tessa liked large words and raised shapes she could feel. Bo wanted arrows that stayed still. A family visiting from another station preferred pictures beside the words. One traveler enjoyed a spoken direction; another preferred a quiet screen.

“We cannot guess all that just by turning up a lamp,” Dandy admitted.

Noor drew a door sign with a sunflower, the words WELCOME ROOM and an arrow. Beside it they placed a raised marker. A small button offered a spoken message when someone chose to press it.

Pip pressed it once.

“Welcome room, to your left,” said a warm recorded voice.

Ivo turned left, walked two steps and stopped beside the table.

“The room contains a suspiciously excellent biscuit,” he reported.

“That is a different sort of information,” Noor said.

Zuri and Pip designed picture markers for the other rooms. The quiet corner received a crescent and the words QUIET PLACE. The workshop had a gear. The garden had a leaf.

Their first arrows were beautiful but rather curly. Bo looked at one for a while.

“Which way does that point?” Bo asked.

Zuri rubbed it out and drew a simpler arrow.

“Thank you for trying it,” she said.

The adults checked the signs at different heights and with different displays. They kept the existing staffed controls working while the new information was tested. No one had to rely on a single color to choose a door or read a reply.

Lumi rolled down the corridor, looking delighted. “My station is becoming easier to visit.”

At the old entrance, Tessa noticed a raised pattern beneath a loose edge of the faded map.

“There is another sign here,” she said.

Mira checked the panel before Noor carefully lifted it. Underneath lay a cream label with a white constellation, a sunflower and words almost hidden by the old map.

EVERYONE WELCOME.

Lumi was silent for a moment.

“That was the station’s first name,” Lumi said at last. “Sunflower was the name people used afterward. I had forgotten the words underneath.”

Zuri traced the constellation in her sketchbook. It matched the quiet patterns on the white postcard. Another clue had found its place.

“The station can have both names,” Pip said. “Sunflower Station. Everyone Welcome.”

Noor checked the wording with Lumi and the maintenance team before adding it to the updated map.

Outside the welcome room, the children hung their new sign. It did not promise that everybody must visit or enjoy the same things.

It simply showed people how to come in, how to find a quiet place, and how to choose their own way.

Lumi read it twice. Then Lumi opened the door.
