The Festival Almost Falls Apart
Saturn filled the great windows of the orbital habitat: pale gold, softly striped, with rings stretching across the view. Inside, the festival planning table looked rather less peaceful.
There were three parade routes, two rehearsal times and a cake diagram larger than Ivo. Every plan had been pinned to the time of Dandy and Mira’s wedding.
“The gardeners cannot be in two places,” Kala said.
“Nor can the kitchen crew,” added Vale.
Mira studied the table. “Then our ceremony needs a place in the festival, rather than making every other event fit around it.”
Dandy nodded. “Let’s ask what people actually want to do.”
Kala invited replies. Some guests wanted music. Others wanted a quiet meal, a garden visit or somewhere to rest. Families had traditions they hoped to share, but did not all want to share them at the same time.
Zuri’s first drawing had put everybody in one enormous circle.
“Perhaps we need several smaller circles,” she said.
Pip added paths between them. He drew a quiet bench beside a window.
Ivo drew a biscuit.
“That is the refreshments symbol,” he explained before anybody could object.
Dandy reached into his coat for a ruler and produced a long ribbon. Mira measured the planning table with it anyway.
“A tiny adjustment?” she asked.
“A table-sized one,” Dandy admitted.
Soon the festival had room for a short parade, family gatherings, quiet watching and a wedding that guests could choose to attend. Nobody had to go to the ceremony to enjoy the rest of the day.
Pip thought of his auntie’s wedding, the celebration he had first traveled toward with the ring box. That had been a different ceremony, earlier in their journey. When a detour changed their route, Mira had arranged for a trusted adult courier to deliver the rings before the little bell rang. Pip had joined his family for the celebration, then later returned to the mystery team.
“Auntie liked her small bell,” he said. “What would you like?”
“A few words, freely chosen,” Mira replied. “And time to listen to them.”
On the workshop link, Noor appeared beside Lumi at Sunflower Station. The repaired lamp supply was ready for its supervised test. A trained maintenance team had joined them, so Lumi would have ordinary help after the visitors left.
“We have asked the seven communities whether they want to share decorative light for a short test,” Noor explained. “The requests name the return time. We will plan with their answers.”
Lumi held up a picture of the four steps from Pip’s paper bridge.
“Ask. Wait. Follow the agreement. Return on time,” Lumi said.
Six replies were ready. Each came with a checked address and a clear agreement. The seventh had arrived in a purple envelope.
Pip recognized it immediately. Purple envelopes had once seemed mysterious. Now they were simply letters waiting to be read.
Kala placed the envelope beside the festival plan.
“One more reply,” she said. “Then we can finish this part of the schedule.”
Lumi looked toward the camera. “Whatever the answer is, we will know what to do.”
