The Seventh Reply

The purple envelope had a violet star on its flap. Inside was a careful letter from the music station.

Kala read it aloud. “Thank you for asking. We are keeping our purple lanterns for our own gathering this week. Our reply is no.”

For a moment, everyone looked at the empty seventh place on the light-sharing plan.

Zuri imagined the big display with one color missing. She almost suggested asking again with a prettier picture.

Then Lumi spoke through the workshop link.

“Their gathering needs their lanterns. We have our answer.”

Zuri put down her pencil. “You’re right.”

Noor entered NO on the permission record. A clear stop shape appeared beside the word. The request closed. The system did not ask for a different answer or set a timer to ask again.

“They explained because they wanted to,” Mira said. “A no would have been enough by itself.”

Pip looked at the invitation list. “Are they still invited to visit?”

“Of course,” Kala answered. “The invitation is not a payment for lending something.”

Lumi dictated a short reply. “Thank you for answering. Enjoy your gathering. You are welcome to visit when you wish.”

Noor checked the address and sent it once.

Now the team could finish the actual festival design. They had plenty of ordinary lighting in the habitat, and their own decorations. They did not need every community’s lantern to make a welcoming room.

Zuri folded violet paper stars. Pip drew white constellations on them. The habitat’s lighting crew chose safe places for the decorations and checked the lamps already available.

Ivo inspected one paper star. “It contains zero borrowed lanterns and a very satisfactory amount of purple.”

Dandy smiled. “That sounds like a good plan.”

At Sunflower, Lumi’s little home lamp glowed from its own checked supply. Noor showed the maintenance team the collector, stored power and simple control instructions. Nobody needed to redirect a neighbor’s celebration light to keep Lumi’s room comfortable.

The six communities that had agreed to the short test received their written return times. The seventh record showed that nothing had been borrowed. Every station could read its own decision.

Lumi looked at all seven entries.

“A no has completed the picture,” Lumi said. “It has not spoiled it.”

Pip remembered the paper bridge. He drew a little path that ended beside a friendly waving hand. Some journeys stopped at a clear answer, and that was a proper ending too.

Noor moved to the repaired calendar. The next morning’s test was ready. Its starting time would be 07:07, the number they had seen so often on the broken clock.

“This time,” Noor said, “we will watch it recognize an ending as well as a beginning.”

The adults checked the plan together. The children put away the finished stars.

The purple envelope went into the answered-letter folder. It no longer held an unknown question.

It held a reply that everyone had understood and respected.
