The Upside-Down Garden

The postcard from Saturn had asked for a garden pointing in every direction. Now Zuri could see why.

Inside a supervised low-gravity exhibit, the planters were secured around a round room. Flowers grew toward checked lights. Visitors viewed them from several comfortable positions.

Zuri’s first guide had one large arrow marked UP. From her seat, it looked correct.

From Pip’s viewing place, it seemed to point sideways.

“Perhaps your drawing has become a pancake,” Ivo suggested.

Zuri frowned. She wanted the garden to match her lovely plan. Then she remembered Noor asking travelers to try the road signs.

“Could we look from your place?” she asked Pip.

The adults helped them use the supervised viewing positions. Nobody floated around fixing things. The gardeners maintained the planters and equipment while the children observed.

From one position, the red flowers looked above them. From another, the blue pot seemed highest. The door stayed in the same place, but the picture looked different.

“Up is not enough for our guide,” Zuri said.

Pip drew the entrance, the center marker and three distinctive planters. Instead of one large arrow, their new guide showed several viewpoints.

They labeled directions with useful destinations: TOWARD THE DOOR, TOWARD THE SUNFLOWER POT and TOWARD THE CENTER.

Other visitors tried the drawings. One asked for bigger words. Another suggested a clear starting picture. Zuri changed the guide again.

By afternoon, the garden had a small book of views beside its ordinary staffed instructions.

“It points in every direction,” Pip said, “without asking every person to see it from the same place.”

The gardener thanked them and showed a name chosen for the next little display: THE VERY POLITE JUNGLE.

“Does it say please?” Ivo asked.

“The sign does,” Zuri replied.

She left one corner of the guide blank for another visitor’s idea. This garden had room for more than one way of looking.
