The Orange Delivery Mix-Up
At Vesta’s parcel depot, orange ribbons hung above rows of baskets. Some were paper. Some were made of light. Pip liked the ones that curled like carrot peel.
Vale, the freight operator, met them at the counter. “We have two party parcels in the wrong baskets,” he said. “And the orange display labels have faded.”
Zuri checked the written labels. They were still clear. The depot workers were using those and their records. Nobody had to guess where important deliveries belonged.
The first party parcel held soft blue bubble hats. The second held orange clock ribbons. One was needed for a dance class. The other was for a workshop celebration.
Pip peered into the baskets. “Blue hats go to the people in blue shirts.”
A cook in a blue shirt passed the counter carrying soup.
“I would look splendid,” the cook said, “but I did not order a hat.”
Pip shut his mouth. Guessing had seemed so quick.
“Could we see the delivery records?” Zuri asked.
“Yes,” said Vale. “A good parcel needs a good address, even if its ribbon is beautiful.”
Ivo shuffled all six feet. “I helped stack these baskets yesterday.”
“What happened?” asked Dandy.
“The tall pile wobbled. I moved two baskets. Then I arranged them by prettiness.”
Dandy’s gold collar caught the warm depot light. “Thank you for telling us. Now we know another useful thing.”
Ivo’s camera lens tipped down. “I meant to help.”
“You can still help,” said Noor. “Mistakes give us work to do. They do not tell us who we are.”
Vale brought the records. Dandy brought a pencil, after first bringing a red spoon. The children drew a bubble hat on one card and a clock ribbon on another. Under each picture, Vale wrote the correct destination.
Pip made the hat’s brim especially wide. “So nobody mistakes it for soup.”
The cook leaned over. “A wise precaution.”
Noor and the depot staff checked the numbers against the records. Then Ivo moved the baskets under Vale’s directions. The adults arranged the deliveries. No one had to choose a parcel by shirt color.
Meanwhile, Noor traced the faded orange display to the same old reply route they had found at Bubble Stop. They sent a drawing with the depot’s correct address and restored its return connection.
Orange light rolled back through the signs. The picture cards stayed on the baskets.
“We can use both,” Vale said. “The orange makes the counter easy to spot. The words and pictures tell us what is here.”
Ivo straightened. “My new stacking system uses addresses first and prettiness second.”
“Excellent,” said Mira. “And asking before moving somebody else’s things.”
“That is section one.”
As the last basket left, Pip spotted a tiny flower stamp on the bottom of a parcel. It matched the mark on their mysterious cream package.
Seven yellow dots gleamed beneath the paper. They made a little wheel.
Zuri drew them carefully.
“Not six feet,” she said.
Ivo looked down at his legs. “A very important distinction.”
Far away on their map, Ceres’s yellow workshop lanterns began to dim.
