The Day The Highway Took A Nap

Their picnic plan had a long journey, three viewing stops and a garden at the end. Dandy had drawn a cheerful arrow through every part.

At breakfast, Mira checked the route board. One section was closed for planned maintenance.

“The team told us in advance,” she said. “We need a different plan for today.”

Dandy tried fitting the three stops around the closed section. His new arrow curled back on itself. Then he added another arrow.

Ivo inspected the page. “The picnic is becoming a knot.”

Dandy put down his pencil.

“Let’s look, let’s listen, then let’s try,” he said. “What do you want most from today?”

Pip wanted time to eat together. Zuri wanted a garden, but did not mind which one. Mira wanted an unhurried day.

The station staff offered two comfortable choices: a nearby picnic garden now, or the longer journey on another day after the scheduled work.

They chose the nearby garden and saved the long trip for later. Nobody needed to squeeze the original plan into a route that was not available.

At the garden, a warm bench overlooked small trees. Pip opened the picnic basket. Zuri sketched a bird-shaped leaf.

Ivo discovered a cupboard of station board games. One had a little highway with resting spaces between the stops.

“This road understands picnics,” he declared.

They played after lunch. Pip reached a resting space and stayed there for an extra turn because he liked its picture.

Dandy did not hurry him.

Before leaving, Mira checked the maintenance update and their agreed future booking. The staff were doing their work, and today’s family outing had gone well.

Zuri turned Dandy’s tangled arrows into a funny drawing titled THE DAY THE HIGHWAY TOOK A NAP.

The real highway had not fallen asleep. It had simply needed care - and the travelers had found time to enjoy a smaller day.
