The Purple Umbrella Parade

The violet music station had planned an indoor umbrella parade. Fine sprays of water would fall over a special stage while violet light made rainbows in the drops. Dry seats stood along the walls.

Zuri loved the idea. She drew a grand route that curled through the whole hall.

“We should march around every corner,” she said. “Then everybody can see everything!”

Pip drew himself holding their mysterious purple umbrella. Ivo practiced marching. His six feet made a sound like tiny spoons falling into a drawer.

Then the violet lanterns faded.

The water team paused the sprays. Ordinary lights stayed on. Doors, signs and staffed travel controls worked as usual.

A tall dancer called Remy folded their umbrella. “Without our rainbow, the parade will look wrong.”

“We should cancel,” another performer said.

A smaller drummer shook her head. “I still want to play.”

Mira gathered them beside the dry seats. “Let’s hear what everyone wants before we decide.”

The drummer liked a short loop near the stage. An older singer wanted a seat where she could join in. Two small children wanted to watch before marching. Remy wanted one beautiful turn with the umbrellas.

Zuri looked at her enormous route. It passed none of the dry seats.

“I chose it without asking,” she said.

Dandy sat beside her. A blue ribbon slipped from his pocket. “A plan can be a first drawing. It does not have to be the last one.”

Zuri took out a fresh page. This time, she asked the performers to point. Pip marked places to rest. Mira checked the route with the staff.

Their new parade was shorter. It passed the dry seats twice. There was room to join, watch or stop.

Noor checked the missing violet light. Their screen showed the now-familiar storage route. They sent the correct station address and began restoring the return connection.

While they worked, the drummer tapped a bouncy tune. Ivo opened his imaginary umbrella, which was only a spoon held over his head.

“Your umbrella is very small,” Pip said.

“My rain requirements are modest.”

Everyone laughed, including Remy. The performers tried a silly dry dance. Umbrellas tilted left, tilted right, then hid each dancer’s face. Ivo hid only his camera lens.

Violet light returned halfway through the practice. It spilled across the closed umbrellas like plum jam.

“We could go back to the grand route now,” Zuri said.

The drummer looked at the comfortable little loop.

Zuri smiled. “But this one fits us better.”

The staff restarted the stage sprays. Violet rainbows shimmered. The parade marched, rested and danced. The smallest children joined when they were ready.

Afterward, Mira inspected their purple umbrella. Inside its canopy, fine lines joined stars to station symbols.

“It is a map,” she said.

Zuri held her sketchbook beneath it. The central mark was a bright green leaf.

Pip found a word beside the leaf.

“Mars,” he read.

And beneath the word, in tiny letters: A GARDEN SHOULD ALWAYS BE READY.
