Seven Little Chimes

Back aboard the ship, Zuri spread their clues across a table. A strawberry drawing. A bubble invitation. A parcel stamp. A yellow wheelprint. A purple umbrella map. A green lantern label. An empty bench.

Pip put a biscuit beside them.

“Is that a clue?” Zuri asked.

“It is a reminder to eat.”

Ivo moved it onto a plate. “A valuable improvement to the investigation.”

Mira had arranged a comfortable stop at a staffed repair station. Noor wanted to compare the lantern records there. The children could use its bright drawing room while the adults worked.

Then the ship’s message screen chimed.

One note. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven.

Reports appeared from the places they had visited. Their restored decorative lanterns were trying to send light down the old storage route again.

Dandy frowned. He took a spoon from his coat, stared at it, and put it back. “We should disconnect the old lantern system.”

“We may need to,” said Noor. “First, could we test one decorative connection here? A short, supervised test would show us what keeps repeating.”

Mira checked the station team’s plan. The working travel signs had their own connections. The test would use only a spare festival lantern at the adult workbench.

Dandy considered it. “Yes. Let’s learn before we choose the repair.”

Zuri liked that. Adults could change their minds, too.

Behind the marked viewing line, she and Pip watched Noor connect the spare lantern. Its screen showed a circle for red, a droplet for blue and all the other color shapes.

Seven notes rang out.

A line of words appeared: BEGIN FESTIVAL. COLLECT AVAILABLE LIGHT.

Then came the same storage-box symbol.

“It is following an instruction,” said Pip.

“Again and again,” Zuri added.

Noor stopped the test. The station staff kept the decorative transfer route separate from the working travel signs. They sent clear notices to the other communities.

“Their workers will check the lanterns,” Mira said. “The highway remains open with its normal words, shapes and staffed controls.”

At the drawing table, the children sorted their clues. Zuri wanted the biggest theory. Pip wanted to start with the smallest things they could prove.

They put every seven-spoke mark in one row. The invitation pictures went in another. RETURN AT FINAL CHIME joined the seven notes.

“A festival starts,” Pip said. “But does it ever finish?”

Dandy leaned over their page. His long dark mane brushed his gold collar. “That is a very useful question.”

Zuri picked up the first purple envelope. Its paper had a thick folded edge. Something white showed inside.

“May we open this fold?” she asked.

The envelope was addressed to their group. Mira checked it and nodded.

Carefully, Zuri unfolded the edge. A hidden line of writing stretched across the paper.

PLEASE COME TO SUNFLOWER STATION.

Pip turned to their current map.

There was no Sunflower Station on it.

But now they had a name for the place that was waiting.
