The Whale in the Smallest Puddle

Meera stepped around the first puddle, over the second puddle and almost into the third. ‘Excuse me,’ squeaked the third puddle. ‘You are standing on my ocean.’ A whale no bigger than her thumb peeped out. It wore a flower as a hat.

Meera crouched beside it. ‘How did you get here?’ ‘I followed the biggest cloud,’ said the whale. ‘But it shrank into this puddle. I am Nib. I am a puddle whale, and my map is very wet.’ His paper map looked like a blue sneeze.

Meera’s orange robot, Toffee, wheeled over. ‘We can carry you to the fountain!’ Nib shook his tiny head. ‘Too splashy.’ ‘The pond?’ asked Meera. ‘Too deep. My ocean is small on purpose.’ Meera put away her biggest ideas and asked a smaller question. ‘What does your home look like?’

Nib described a round puddle beneath a leaf, three white stones and a reflection shaped like a duck. Toffee drew those clues on a fresh sheet. They searched the garden path from the dry edge, leaving every little creature where it lived. One puddle had three stones, but its reflection looked like a spoon. Another had a leaf, but it was long and narrow.

Then Meera spotted a toy duck hanging from a treehouse window. Beneath it lay a round puddle shaded by a broad leaf. Three white stones stood on the edge. ‘The duck is a reflection!’ she said. ‘Your map points upward as well as along the path.’

Nib still could not get there by himself. Meera asked Grandma for help. Grandma found a clean, shallow garden saucer. With Nib’s permission, they floated it beside him. He hopped aboard, and Grandma carried his saucer low and steady to the round puddle.

At home, Nib opened a tiny cupboard under the leaf. ‘Tea?’ he asked. His teacups were drops of water on flower petals. Meera pretended to take a sip. Toffee politely pretended too. The flower hat came off, and a very small yawn came out.

Before they left, Meera drew a new map with the duck, stones and leaf. On its back she drew a whale saying: ask what I need. ‘You found me a small enough ocean,’ Nib whispered. The next morning, the third puddle was empty. On its edge sat one flower hat, and beneath it a note made of three carefully arranged white stones.

Read in Hindi ·
