The Snail Who Won the Slow Parade

Every spring, the garden held a Very Fast Race. Beetles zoomed, ants marched, and grasshoppers bounced. Sumi the snail always arrived after the flags had been put away. ‘I am excellent at arriving,’ she said. ‘I simply take longer.’

This spring, the race organizer changed the sign. It now said: THE SLOW PARADE. ‘We are delivering flower pictures to the old stump,’ announced Bee. ‘The pictures must arrive dry, untorn and with everyone together.’ Grasshopper grinned. ‘Easy!’ He bounced away with three pictures. They fluttered into a rosebush.

Ant carried a stack taller than her head. She could not see the path. Beetle raced a cart around the first corner, and its paper flowers slid off. Sumi looked at the scattered pictures. ‘May we pause?’ she asked. ‘I know the garden rather well. I have spent a long time looking at it.’

She pointed out a smooth path beside the daisies, a shady rest spot under a leaf and a puddle that could soak the paper. Bee drew Sumi’s route on a large leaf. Ant suggested smaller stacks. Beetle added soft leaf rails to the cart. Grasshopper retrieved the three pictures and promised to keep his next bounce small.

They tried the route together. At the puddle, Grasshopper started to leap ahead. Then he noticed Sumi had stopped. ‘Something wrong?’ he asked. ‘Someone is missing.’ The smallest ant was still coming around the corner. Nobody called her slow. They waited until she joined them.

At the old stump, all the flower pictures were dry and whole. Every friend had arrived. Bee looked for a winner, but the parade had no finish-line ribbon. Sumi unrolled a leaf. Inside was a tiny picture she had drawn of all of them traveling together.

‘Sumi wins!’ shouted Beetle. ‘What did I win?’ Sumi asked. Bee thought for a moment. ‘The job of showing us how to notice.’ Sumi liked that. Grasshopper liked the new job too. He had noticed he was hungry.

They ate a picnic at the stump, and the smallest ant hung Sumi’s picture in the middle. Next spring, the garden had two events: a race for anyone who liked racing, and a parade for everyone who liked arriving together. Sumi came first to the parade. She had started yesterday.

Read in Hindi ·
