Where it applies: India — year, taxpayer type, regime and actual portal requirements matter

01 · What is this?

A readable guide to the current tax bands, plus the year label to use when you discuss a return or payment.

02 · When is it useful?

Use it when you are confused by old versus new regime, FY versus AY, or the new Tax Year label.

03 · Start here

Write the dates when the income was earned. FY 2025–26 returns use AY 2026–27; income April 2026–March 2027 uses Tax Year 2026–27.

Gather your pieces

  1. These fixed tables cover 2026–27. Do not change their year by editing a field or use them for another year without checking.
  2. The old-regime table below is specifically for a resident individual below 60. Other ages and taxpayer categories require the appropriate table.
  3. A marginal rate applies to the slice of taxable income in that band. Rebates, deductions, special-rate income, surcharge and cess affect the final result.
